Photos: Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix 2017

For a second time I headed to the Formula One in Melbourne. This year I headed down just for the Saturday Free Practice and Qualifying sessions.

Overall the day was excellent. Being able to see the new cars and the sheer speed of them through the corners compared to the touring and GT cars.

A great addition to this year’s event was the fan forum stage which had some great driver interviews. I learnt that Kimi Räikkönen can smile and even tell funny jokes.

Below are a few photos and video from the day.

Photos: Muscle Car Masters 2016

At the end of October I went to the annual Muscle Car Masters at Sydney Motorsport Park.

This was the first time I had attended the MCM and it was a great day out. Watching the old cars from well before my time and from my childhood was a great change from the modern Supercars that I usually watch.

Below is a small selection of photos covering the various categories and eras racing during the event.

Thoughts on the 2016 Malaysian Formula One GP

Yesterday’s 2016 Malaysian Formula One GP was one of the best (if not the best) races of this year’s F1 season.

As a big fan of Daniel Ricciardo I’m extremely happy that he won the race, but that isn’t the sole reason why I think this race was excellent.

In no particular order these are the things that made it great:

  • Nico Rosberg fighting back from 21st place to 3rd place. He was extremely lucky not to be out of the race on the first corner, lucky again not to have any damage, and furthermore he was lucky to not damage his car when he hit Kimi Räikkönen.
  • Red Bull splitting strategies to put Lewis Hamilton under pressure. At first I was annoyed that Max Verstappen was given the pit stop and not Ricciardo but it was a risk that the stop was too early and the tires wouldn’t last later in the race.
  • Red Bull allowing Ricciardo and Verstappen to race each other, and they raced very hard and very fair. As it turned out by Ricciardo not allowing Verstappen past it determined the outcome of the race.
  • Additionally, by double stacking both Red Bulls under the Virtual Safety Car and giving them fresh rubber gave them an almost equal fight to the flag.
  • Both McLaren Honda cars in the top 10, in the last few races they have massively improved their performance.
  • Jolyon Palmer scoring his first points in F1.

The video below captures the battle between Ricciardo and Verstappen and then the moment that Hamilton’s engine gave up.

Daniel Ricciardo’s post race interview dedicating the win to Jules Bianchi was poignant as well.

And finally everyone on the podium doing the Shoey was hugely entertaining:

All of this action makes me as excited as this little man:

In late August I went to the Friday practice sessions of the 2016 round of the Supercars at Sydney Motorsport Park. The support classes for this event were top notch. In particular the Carrera Cup Asia and the Toyota 86 categories were great to watch.

The photos below are from a variety of the categories that day.

Diecast Model V8 Supercars

A year or so ago I first saw the draft model Erebus E63 Mercedes Benz V8 Supercar that Biante Model Cars was producing, it looked absolutely spectacular. A few months ago the finished version of that model was released and as Erebus Motorsport are no longer racing the E63 I decided it would be a model worth collecting so I purchased it. This was the first model car that I’ve purchased since I was a teenager and by far the most expensive. When it arrived I couldn’t believe the level of detail in the 1/18 scale model. As a consequence I purchased the model of the Volvo S60 on my next paycheck. They are now proudly displayed on my bookcase and I have my eyes on more models, this could become an expensive hobby.

I flew from Sydney to Melbourne on Sunday to attend the 2016 Melbourne F1 Grand Prix, in doing so I literally fulfilled a childhood dream.

After arriving at the circuit as the gates opened, I headed to the “Melbourne Walk” to watch the drivers arriving for the day. This is a great way to get really close to the drivers for photos and their autographs. I then met up with a friend who had also come down from Sydney for the day and we watched the support races from various areas close to the pits.

For the Formula One race itself we headed over to the back of the circuit and sat on one of the embankments with hundreds of other fans. The atmosphere around Albert Park was brilliant and had quiet a different vibe to the V8 Supercar events that I normally attend. The race itself was also excellent, with everyone making a lot of noise when Ferrari beat Mercedes into the first corner and whenever passing happened throughout the pack. I am also extremely relieved that Alonso was completely uninjured in his crash, it’s the worst crash I’ve seen at a motorsport event and how he simply walked away from the wreck shows the quality of the safety designs of the cars. Overall, despite the high cost for the general admission day ticket, the viewing mounds and off-track activities right around the circuit made it a great day out.

V8 Supercars Sydney 500 2015 Photos

(Note: this was posted in February but backdated to December).

In early December I went to all three days of the finale round of the V8 Supercars Championship at Sydney Olympic Park.

I was very fortunate to have won a competition for a hot lap in a V8 Supercar on the Friday afternoon. I was not told of which team or car I would have the ride in until a few minutes before the lap. The car I was assigned was the Erebus Mercedes Benz E63 AMG V8 Supercar. I’ve been lucky enough to have ridden in race cars before so I knew what to expect when the car was braking for a corner. However, what I had yet to experience was the sheer power that the V8 Supercar has while accelerating, it was far more powerful than any rollercoaster or ride I’ve been on before.

There are a few photos from the three days of racing below.
